The village was no place for dogs like me. I roamed the streets with another young pointer boy, both of us born to survive, not to live. I don’t know what happened to my mother, I just kept moving because stopping felt dangerous.
I was always hungry. Always scared. Covered in ticks. My jaw hurt constantly from an infected bite wound, and every day I grew weaker.
Yesterday, they caught me.
I was terrified.
They said I wouldn’t have survived much longer out there.
For the first time in my life, I think they might be right.
