I’m Alex. I’m five years old, and my fur is soft and curly—my humans used to say I looked like a little cloud. I thought I’d always be their cloud.

But one morning, things felt different. Boxes everywhere, the smell of tape, clothes folded in neat piles. My tail wagged at first because I thought it was a game. Packing always meant something exciting, like a trip! I followed them, hopeful, waiting for someone to clip on my leash.Instead, we got into the car, when the car stopped, I smelled it before I saw it: other dogs, nervous barks, strange people, the sharp tang of disinfectant. A shelter.I didn’t understand. They said words like America and future—words too big for me. All I knew was that they walked away, and I pressed my paws against the gate, my tail still wagging, slower now. My cloud-heart felt heavy.
